In an uncertain world of turmoil and strife, whom can we turn to for a summery of happenings from this, our global village? The answer is Shaun Barnes, his column begins now…

Here’s a trivia question for you: what country used to be closely aligned with the Soviet Union, displays a flagrant disregard for the global non-proliferation regime, and just got a sweet deal to receive nuclear technology from the United States? If you said China, you’re an uniformed troglodyte who’s obviously never heard of the Sino-Soviet split. If you said India, good for you…you’re right.

An agreement allowing the US to sell civilian nuclear technology to India was signed into law on Monday. So why has America changed course after India’s 1998 nuclear test brought on a predictable shit-flinging tantrum, complete with economic sanctions? Moreover, isn’t it blatant favoritism to cut a deal with a known proliferator while reading the riot act to Iran? The answer, of course, is yes. That’s the whole idea.

India is important to America for any number of reasons. It’s the worlds largest democracy, the second most populous country on the planet, has a rapidly expanding economy, and makes it possible for you to call customer service at 3:17 am when your HD BitTorrent binge fries your CPU. On top of that, India happens to be the dominant power in South Asia, a key strategic region for the United States. (For the geographically disinclined, it’s where the terrorism lives.) In the final analysis, India broke the rules, but they behave pretty well and we need their help, so they get a cookie. Iran can go fuck itself until it stops throwing hate parties and funding Hizbollah. ‘Nuff said.
