Three Stars of the Newscycle: 9.12.06
September 12th, 2006 by Justin
Steve Jobs opened his mouth today so it’s time for us to pry apart our eager beaks and swallow the delicious nutrition he pours forth. Mmmmmm, what’s in there this time?
Well, it turns out he’s struck a tremendous deal with himself at Disney to bring all of that company’s flicks onto the iPod. The one story I read kind of gave them flack for starting with only the one company while Amazon’s new movie download service Unbox (shitty name, btw) has a standing agreement with several companies. This, of course, ignores that last fall Apple started the iTunes TV downloads with only Lost, Desperate Housewives and Kolchak: The Night Stalker and pretty successfully built out.
At this point, Apple is in the power position, they prove they are the way to go for online distribution and then let those who want to take advantage step forward. Also, the early buzz is that this release (including faster downloads, competitive pricing, discounts on new releases and the ability to view your movie while it downloads in thirty minutes or less) whips the shit out of Amazon.
And they debuted a new Nano, a new Shuffle and teased the iTV, which should be dominating our worldview sometime in the near future.
In all good fun, this is from Egadnet’s presentation coverage:
Apple is in your den
Apple is in your living room
Apple is in your car
Apple is in your pocket

So if these things are supposed to download in 30 minutes, why the hell is it taking me eight years to download a TV show post-iTunes upgrade?
Worked just fine in a rather speedy manner before. Now with all the bells and whistles, my computer is crying about the wait. In tears I tell you. Real Apple tears.

What TV show Graf? I downloaded an ep of Battlestar Galactica the night they upgraded an it was done in a speedy 9 minutes.

Pre-upgrade it took me about 15 minutes to dowload an episode of “Eureka.” Now, it is taking more than an hour. I have to admit I haven’t checked all the connection stuff out just yet, but it seems suspicious that I wasn’t having trouble until the switch.

Do you think if we make a reference to Stan Lee’s Superhero show we can get free stuff from the Sci Fi network?
How is Eureka?

Thus far, I have only watched the pilot. It was free. But I was interested enough to download a few more. (Please be aware that since the move, I haven’t yet had cable hooked up, so I am hardup for entertainment. If it doesn’t come from iTunes, I haven’t seen it.)
The lead dude is pretty cute, too

AND, I forgot to mention … my fiance was obsessed with that “Superhero” show. It hurt my head. But he loved it.
Sadly, he missed the ending. Now I must go on a hunt to see who won.
