Media Complimentfest

August 30th, 2006 by Justin

Thumbs upNormally this space is used to lampoon and harass media professionals who I have not and likely will never meet. I have carped into the hallow abyss of these internets for over a year now about how media pros are old, out of touch, socially deaf and culturally impotent boobs too focused on the “good old days” to realize the beautiful new awaiting dawn.

But this time it’s kind of different, Nation Review Media Critic William Powers seems have what one might title a “progressive” view of media criticism. Instead of being threatened by an immature jerk-off like myself or the thousands of other immature jerk-offs who pen similar material, he embraces the influx.

So, kudos.

There is one topic broached that I thought our Gang of 15 could weigh in on. Powers states that although it is not necessary to have a background in journalism to criticize the media, it tends to help. But what is that line? Which are the areas that a non-pro (like KKKati Rivers or Sports Reporter Rachel) might fare better, looking in from the outside? What areas really require context, which newspaper folk like Graf or Copy Katy have, to dissect.

Discuss… Unless nobody comments, in that case consider the matter closed and never speak of it again.

well, i promised i would post. i was busy at work and didn’t really have time to think abou twhat i want to write, BUT, off the top of me head, i will say this. FIRST, you, JUSTIN, ought to post this question again because i do belive that i could incur interesting results.

so, i will say that i have often censored myself in the bitchfest critiques due to the fact that i am not a journalist and i am not incredibly well versed in the semantics of good vs. bad vs. whatever reporting…

nevertheless, i do believe that the news is important not for the journalist, but for the reader. if anyone has ever read alesander de’togueville’s position on the news they will understand. news is SUPPOSED to be a watchdog for the citizen. and the citizen ought to be able to deduct from the news at least an IOTA of truth about the situation they live in. it is their way, truth and life. eh..hahah. joke. that’s god speaking. ANYWAY. i won’t get into my opinion and theory on the way journalists do and ought to view news…rather i will stick to the way non-newsies check the news.

our comments exist solely on our perception. and unfortunately perception tends to be reality. thus, our personal reality is what truly interprets news — that is if we are intelligent enough to analyze the news. SO, point being, there are PLENTY of ignorant people in the world (who watch fox news) that belive the news like it’s the bible. There are others, such as Sportscaster Rachel, who are more critical, and perhaps more cynical, who QUESTION the news.

umm…Cutty Sark (Capote’s drink) is getting the best of me. so, all i will say at this point is…band of bees compells me to say that an educated person is not to believe anything, word for word, in the news. …you know what? with that statement my eyelid began to twitch thus relegating me to wonder whether i should have made that statement. I WILL SAY THIS: the news is for the PEOPLE. non-newsies make comments that relate to their persons…um…JUSTIN? can you please ask this question again because I’M SURE i have a good answer but at this point i’m making an ass of myself so i’m gonna go now.

everyone needs an outside opion and even better if it’s objective. i’m too interested in sex right now to think. bye bye.
