Tales From The Front: Madness Edition

Let me tell you all something about my old friend Graf, she takes her shit seriously. As my editor, she once almost ripped my belly inside out for suggesting that we use italics to show voice inflection in a story.

“What the fuck does that even mean?” she demanded. And she was right, italics are overused and vague.
So with that in mind, I asked if her paper (where she works on the copy desk) used a pun headline for the Meb Gibson story, knowing that she would rather reverse birth a nest of hermit crabs than let something that corny slip through.

Her response:

I hang my head in shame. There was a ton of mess going on here yesterday and that kind of hed was the least of my worries, I fear. Our hed: “Mad Max acted like a Mad Dog.” Please forgive me and my kind. It won’t happen again. (Well, it might, but I will try to keep it from happening as much as possible. I swear. With cherries on top.) ~Graf

I am shocked this didn’t end in seppuku.

   I will say, however, it wasn’t a pun. It was a lame hed, I admit. But not a pun. (Pun: the usually humorous use of a word in such a way as to suggest two or more of its meanings or the meaning of another word similar in sound.)
   This is one in my list of ways to redeem myself. (Though I didn’t write the hed, it just ran in my paper.)
