Old Timer Fires Back, Blogger Very Polite
July 27th, 2006 by Justin
If you remember correctly, yesterday morning I poked fun at a story about YouTube written by one Tom Scocca for the New York Observer. If you one of The 15, you know that this kind of things happens, well, twice a day. More rare, is when the object of my ridicule reads what I wrote and decides to write back. So thanks Technorati, big fucking help you are…
Dear Media Bitchfest:
Thanks for the tag. I _am_ an old fart, and it drives me nuts working in a business where people talk about 48-year-olds as child prodigies.
I probably should have written “air of mystification” rather than “mystical ai
r.” But, lordy, sonny-boy, I don’t pine for the days when Dennis Miller could coast on his reputuation without reinspection. I’m sorry if it read that way.
TV becoming more like written text is basically a good thing (”a surprise victory for library science,” some might call it), and some good things happen to be a little uncomfortable in some ways. I’m glad to have Frank Zappa and Len Bias back in whatever form. I just feel a little sorry for, say, the “Boom Goes the Dynamite” guy (probably more sentimental old-man thinking on my part; I’m sure he’s cashed in on his disgrace like William Hung).
So I think we don’t disagree as much as you think we do. Except about “Running Faggot.” A three-judge Observer panel was specifically saddened and disappointed by watching “Running Faggot” on YouTube in the course of preparing the piece. But the judges were all closer to 40 than to 20.
Regards,
Tom Scocca
So it turns out Tom can take a joke and just wanted to discuss the point a little further, very cool, unlike some grad students I know. My response after the jump…
Tommy,
First, thanks for writing back. As smug as the blog can come off at
times, I enjoy nothing more than to open a dialogue on the subjects I
ham fistedly touch on.On the YouTube issue, I agree that we are not far apart and
accountability for anyone (Dennis included) is a good thing. I mean,
imagine Dane Cook fans in 20 years, jesus. I really think the
difference for us is a age-constructed cultural one. From the time I hit puberty me and my generation have been treated
to fantastic technological advances at a historically staggering
pace, specifically in the realm of PC communications. Dial-up,
message boards, IM, Google, MySpace, YouTube, they all came and
changed the way we lived without us giving it a second thought. For
us, it just happens and we roll with the punches, by the time we
adapt to the last innovation, the revolution is upon us again.I guess my point is that YouTube (and by definition, the new archival
nature of video) plays with me and mine as the next logical step,
superseding the novelty of catching a flickering image in the night.
We are a forward looking generation, confident we will find a better
way because we always have. Maybe we just haven’t seen enough
(likely) but I just think the utilitarian aspects of the service
shine harder than anything else.In closing, I am disappointed that you and your blue ribbon panel did
not find Running Faggot funny, I dare not infer what kind of dreary
gray scape your souls operate on.Just kidding Tommy, thanks again for writing. Would you mind if I
posted your response on the site?Justin Robert Young

p.s. For laughs, here is another Kids sketch I enjoy-
http://youtube.com/watch?v=M7TXfjJ6omk&search=kids%20nippleLet me know what you and the panel decide.
And finally, Tom gives the OK…
Sure, have a ball.
The only people who call me “Tommy” are my godmother and the mothers of girls I went to middle school with. And they do it with love.
Allllright, I’ll give. I was trying to get your goat with the Tommy knocks. Sorry. I like futzing with journalists, that’s why I do this site. You don’t even blink though, do you. Quick staring contest, me and you, right now…….. You win. You always do.
r.” But, lordy, sonny-boy, I don’t pine for the days when Dennis Miller could coast on his reputuation without reinspection. I’m sorry if it read that way.
