Excelsior! One of these real review blurbs is from the new Al Gore picture show An Inconvenient Truth the other is about Jake Gyllenhaal’s first liberal statement movie, The Day After Tomorrow. Both are about global warming.

Answers at the bottom.

“For all of its dire premonitions, foreshadowings of horror and easy targets for Jay Leno jokes, [Title of Film] is eye-poppingly awesome and wonderfully entertaining.”

- Rex Reed, New York Observer

and

“It’s a mind-boggling disaster epic that draws its special power from the fact that we are both the villains and victims of the story.”

- William Arnold, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Hey, let's rip off the kitchen scene from Jurassic ParkI am not trying to take anything away from Mr. Emmerich (Independence Day, Godzilla) or Mr. Gore (The Clinton Administration, Futurama). I am just saying that one of these movies is being touted as a scientifically based argument for a radical recalibration of how we look at energy and one of them has zoo wolves that survive a flash ice age and try to kill Donnie Darko on a boat that floats into mid-town Manhattan.

Let’s go again…

“Subtext is just as important as text in [Roland Emmerich or Al Gore’s] cautionary tale of global warming and call to arms. [The film] shows how personal tragedies ([The main character] almost losing his son) and crises can be channeled creatively toward relevant issues larger than oneself.”

Emanuel Levy, EmanuelLevy.com

and…

“a cautionary thriller that delivers its dire warnings with about as much tact and delicacy as Chicken Little… often shamefully entertaining…”

James Sanford, Kalamazoo Gazette

Also, Gyllenhaal outruns cold. Not a manifestation of cold like a gust of wind or a snowman or anything, the actual phenomenon of freezing. He runs away from it down a hallway and beats it. One more time…

“For a doomsday [film], it’s shockingly entertaining. Well, on second thought maybe ‘entertaining’ isn’t exactly the right word…”

Sean Burns, Philadelphia Weekly

and…

“[The film] isn’t satisfying in every way, but in the ways that really matter, it’s one superior disaster movie.”

Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

Wolves, people. I’m just saying.

[…] Everybody’s gone all crazy about this Global Warming thing lately, right? Well MBF fetish Science Tuesday has an answer this morning, screw that whole “not producing Greenhouse Gasses” malarkey, let’s just invent wild contraptions to contain it. Possibilities include a giant disc that blocks out the sun and “injecting sunlight-scattering particles into the stratosphere.” Also, one of the top three Health stories on the Google News page is a study suggesting postmenopausal women drink six cups of decaf coffee a day to curtail Type 2 Diabetes. Because apparently getting your grandma to pee constantly is the key to her survival. […]
