Sounds like there’s trouble afoot — these rowdy youngsters who’ve entered the workplace in the last few years are stirring shit up, whether they’re wearing beer shirts, to wit, or astonishing superiors with their command of random acronyms.

So the Poynter journalism think-tank published a guide to managing Generation Y for people who for some reason don’t think flip-flops are shoes.

The guide hits a few good points, a few descriptions I even identify with — for example, the story and its sources somewhat condescendingly report that we are “confident,” and that we like to “join organizations not because they have to, but because they really want to, because there’s something significant happening there.”

Uh, yeah. We already know we can get paid to do wild shit on the internet, so why waste our time in boring jobs?

Beyond those glimmers of hope lies the main fallacy of this whole “Gen-Y” thing. For all the effort wasted trying to “manage” us, everyone’s missed the point:

Stop making up names, and treat us like adults.

Like it or not, if we were born in the ’80s and we work in your office, that’s what we are. No one really cares if you understand our “work-life balance” or think we’re “heavily parented and programmed.”

There is no secret to working with us. Just stop the iPod references and start being peers. And maybe, someday, someone who’s a little older than me can explain this.
